Introduction: A Life Dedicated to Nalayira Divya Prabandham

Among the distinguished scholars who have dedicated their lives to preserving and propagating the sacred tradition of the Nalayira Divya Prabandham, U. Ve. Sri T. Rajagopalan Swami, affectionately known throughout the Sri Vaishnava community as “Chellandu Swami,” occupies a place of honour. His life is a shining example of unwavering devotion, humility, simplicity, and selfless Bhagavad, Bhagavata, and Acharya Kainkaryam.
Early Life and Heritage
Born in Parthiva Year (1946), Panguni month, under the Puram Nakshatram, Chellandu Swami was born into a family steeped in the Sri Vaishnava tradition. His father, Thirunangur Pattu Swami Sri Thiruvenkata Iyengar, was a renowned Divya Prabandha scholar from the sacred Divya Desam of Thirunangur, while his mother, Smt. Komalavalli, hailed from the Divya Desam of Sirupuliyur. From his childhood, he grew up in an atmosphere filled with Divya Prabandham, temple worship, and Acharya bhakti.
The Origin of the Name “Chellandu”
Although affectionately called “Chellappa” at home, several people in Thirunangur bore the same name. To distinguish him from others, villagers lovingly began calling him “Chellandu.” Over the years, this affectionate name became permanent, and today he is respectfully known throughout the Sri Vaishnava world as “Chellandu Swami.”
Education and Spiritual Foundation
His father was not merely a teacher but a living example of Kainkaryam. Along with Thirunagari Swamigal, he travelled on foot to numerous Divya Desams, carrying the tradition of Nalayira Divya Prabandha Parayanam to temples across the region. Witnessing this extraordinary dedication from childhood, young Rajagopalan naturally followed in his father’s footsteps.
He learnt the Nalayira Divya Prabandham completely under the guidance of his father. Subsequently, he received Samāśrayaṇam and advanced Sampradaya instruction at the holy feet of Thirunangur Vaikunta Vinnagaram Thirumaligai Mahavidwan U. Ve. Sri Prathivathi Bhayankaram Annangarachariar Swami, thereby strengthening his grounding in the Sri Vaishnava tradition.
Professional Career and Family Life
After completing his education at Thirunangur, he joined the Department of Posts and served the Government with dedication. Yet, throughout his professional career, he never allowed worldly responsibilities to diminish his commitment to Divya Prabandha Kainkaryam. Government service became his profession; Divya Prabandham remained his life’s mission.
On 1 May 1978, he married Smt. Vijayalakshmi, and together they have nurtured a family deeply rooted in Sri Vaishnava values. They are blessed with two sons and one daughter:
Elder Son: Resides in the United States, continuing his father’s mission by teaching Nalayira Divya Prabandham to devotees and younger generations abroad.
Younger Son: Sri Vasudevan, based in Chennai, actively participates in Divya Prabandha Parayanams and religious gatherings at numerous Divya Desams.
Daughter: Lives in the United States, where she continues to preserve and practise the Sri Vaishnava way of life.
Teaching and Nurturing Future Generations
For the past twenty-five years, Chellandu Swami has been serving as the Divya Prabandha Adhyapaka at Smt. Jayanthi Janakiraman Ninaivu Dravida Veda Agama Padasala, Thirunangur. With extraordinary patience and affection, he has trained several generations of students in the proper recitation, pronunciation, and understanding of the Nalayira Divya Prabandham. Many of his students are today rendering Divya Prabandha Kainkaryam in temples and religious institutions in India and abroad.
Unwavering Commitment to Selfless Service (Kainkaryam)
Perhaps the most remarkable feature of his life is his unceasing commitment to Kainkaryam. For several decades, he has travelled throughout Tamil Nadu, participating in Adhyayana Utsavams, Divya Prabandha Parayanams, Samprokshanams, Brahmotsavams, and numerous other Sampradaya functions. Whether the invitation comes from a renowned Divya Desam or a remote village temple, he never declines an opportunity to serve.
He travels by whatever public transport is available, willingly accepts the simplest accommodation, and never considers personal inconvenience an obstacle. He has never viewed these journeys as a means of receiving even the modest Sambhavanai traditionally offered. His only aspiration has always been to join the Goshti and render Bhagavad, Bhagavata, and Acharya Kainkaryam through the recitation of the Divya Prabandham.
Global Outreach and Modern Adaptation
Embracing modern technology without compromising tradition, Chellandu Swami also teaches Divya Prabandham through telephone classes, enabling devotees from various parts of India and abroad to continue their learning. Numerous students living overseas continue to receive instruction from him regularly.
Even during visits to the United States to spend time with his family, he dedicates himself to temple service and Divya Prabandha Parayanam rather than personal leisure. Likewise, he has participated in Parayanams and religious programmes in Singapore, Malaysia, and other countries, carrying the message of the Azhwars far beyond India’s shores.
Leadership and Respect in the Sampradaya
Among organizers of Divya Prabandha Parayanams, Chellandu Swami enjoys immense respect for his ability to organize and conduct Goshtis in strict accordance with Sampradaya traditions. Whenever he is entrusted with the responsibility of leading a Parayanam, devotees appreciate his discipline, meticulous planning, deep scriptural knowledge, and ability to unite participants into a harmonious Goshti.
His life beautifully demonstrates that true Kainkaryam is performed without expectation of comfort, recognition, or reward. Simplicity, humility, discipline, unwavering Acharya Bhakti, and profound love for the Divya Prabandham have become the defining hallmarks of his personality.
