Thirumangai Azhvār, Nampillai, and Sri Priyavāchan Pillai — A Connected Divine Lineage
Thirumangai Azhvār, in Periya Thirumozhi 7.10.10, addresses Lord Krishna with the following verse:
“meymmaich sollil veṇ sangam onḏṟ ēnthiya
kaṇṇā! nin thanakkum kuṟippāgil
kaṟkalām kaviyin poruḷ thānē”
(Periya Thirumozhi 7.10.10)
Here Azhvār says, “O Krishna, who holds the white conch! If You truly desire it, even You can learn the deeper meanings of my verses.”
Thirumangai Azhvār once declared that even Lord Krishna could learn the deeper meanings of his Periya Thirumozhi if He wished. Tradition records that the Lord responded, saying that although He longed to learn from Azhvār, His archāvatāra form did not permit it at that time. He promised Azhvār that both of them would take birth again:
so that He might learn from His own devotee in that future birth.
According to traditional Sri Vaishnava sampradāya, the Lord responded that although He indeed wished to learn from Azhvār, the archāvatāra form He had assumed at that time did not permit it. He told Azhvār that:
- Azhvār would be reborn later as Thirukkalikanri Dāsar,
- on the sacred day Kārthigai month – Kārthigai star,
- and He Himself would take birth as Sri Krishna in the form of Sri Priyavāchan Pillai,
- on Āvani Rohiṇi.
In that incarnation, He would take Azhvār — now Nampillai — as His Āchārya, learn from him the meanings of all the works of the Azhvārs, Āṇḍāḷ, the rahasya granthas, and the Rāmāyaṇam, and then teach these to the world.
Thus:
- Thirumangai Azhvār was reborn as Nampillai (Thirukkalikanri Dāsar).
- Lord Krishna appeared as Sri Priyavāchan Pillai (PVP).

The Sacred History of Sri Priyavāchan Pillai and the Lord of Senganallur
- Azhvār as Thirukkalikanri Dāsar (Sri Nampillai) on Kārthigai – Kārthigai,
- and He Himself as Sri Priyavāchan Pillai on Āvani Rohiṇi,
As ordained, centuries later, Sri Priyavāchan Pillai (Krishṇa Suri in his early years) set out with his family to Tirumala. There he stayed for a long period, immersing himself in kainkaryam to Thiruvengadamudaiyān.
In Senganallur, his parents deeply missed him and earnestly prayed to the Lord to bring their son back home. Moved by their devotion, the Lord appeared before Krishṇa Suri in the form of a young priest, placed a sacred Śālagrāma in his hands, and instructed him:
- to return to his parents and serve them,
- and assured him, “I shall always be with you in the form of this Śālagrāma.”
The Miracle at Manniyaaru River
On his way back to the village, Krishṇa Suri halted near Senganallur and went to bathe in the Manniyaaru River. Before entering the water, he carefully placed the Śālagrāma beneath a tree on the riverbank.
After his bath, he was shocked to find that the Śālagrāma was missing. Overwhelmed with anxiety and sorrow, he returned home distressed and wept himself to sleep.
That night, the Lord appeared in his dream, comforting him and instructing him to dig at the very spot where he had placed the Śālagrāma.
The Discovery of Lord Venkateswara
The next morning, Krishṇa Suri gathered the villagers and went to the riverbank. As they dug at the indicated spot, they uncovered a magnificent eight-foot Śilā-Mūrti of Lord Venkateswara, in the divine abhaya-hasta posture. The village rejoiced at the Lord’s extraordinary manifestation.
They placed the deity on a bullock cart to bring Him to the village. But as the cart entered the agrahāram, the wheel broke, making it impossible to move further. Understanding this as the Lord’s divine wish, Krishṇa Suri installed the Mūrti right at that place.
A temple was built there, and he established regular worship, performing daily pūjā and rituals with heartfelt devotion.
At the Feet of Sri Nampillai
After some days, having ensured the Lord’s worship was firmly established, Krishṇa Suri travelled to Srirangam. There he surrendered at the holy feet of Sri Nampillai, becoming his devoted disciple. Blessed by his Āchārya, he later authored celebrated vyākhyānas, upheld the traditions of Srirangam, and came to be revered as Sri Priyavāchan Pillai—the very incarnation promised by the Lord to Thirumangai Azhvār.
Because of this favourable atmosphere, he was able to:
- Write several granthams,
- Compose authoritative vyākhyānas,
- And contribute immensely to the preservation and systematisation of Sri Vaishnava literature and tradition.
A Golden Period in Srirangam
Sri Priyavāchan Pillai lived in a period when Srirangam enjoyed relative peace. Unlike:
Sri PVP experienced a stable environment with no major disturbances.
- The political pressures during the times of Sri Rāmānuja and Sri Koorathāzhvān,
- Or the Islamic invasions faced during the times of Pillai Lokacharyar and Vedanta Desikar,
